Production Notes

Tan Man is a project that Pegside Films has been developing for a while now. The script was written three years ago, but the actual production including fundraising was done over a year ago. After the funds were acquired the schedule of the production was set at five months. That  included the whole production plus the editing; very short time for such an ambitious project.

Tan Man is a low budget teen comedy that was shot in Winnipeg, Manitoba in nine days, spread out through a three week period. The schedule was broken down into three parts. The first three months were for producing, casting and rehearsing. The fourth month would be for shooting and the fifth for editing. Casting was done in three days with more people picked up later on in the production. Most of the actors are local Winnipeg actors and most of them were acquired through the audition process. The rehearsing took place in a friend’s café and a local dance school donated some space. We rehearsed once a week for about two months. Since this was a low budget film all the locations were also donated by friends of the production team. Pegside Films teamed up with Absurd machine studios, a local independent film company to make this film happen. The Film was shot on High definition with a main crew of six plus a lot of production assistants. A two camera set-up was used with one boom guy recording sound straight into the camera.

The first main problem that we had was that we couldn’t find a permanent actor to play Moe. Two actors were supposed to have done it but they both dropped out. So three weeks before the shoot, the director didn’t want to take another chance of hiring someone who would drop out, so he took it upon himself to play the role Moe. Directing and acting in your own movie is not easy to do, especially if you want to do a good job. If you’re prepared for it that’s one thing, but if you take over last minute just because one of the guys dropped out it messes up your efficiency. It really takes away from both directing and the acting process. You have to concentrate on two different things and therefore always one of those things suffers. But this is the independent world and you do what you got to do. The one thing that I realized so far into my career when it comes to keeping people happy on sets even when negative stuff is happening, just feed them. Feed them well and they’ll stick with you. On this production I was very proud of my catering since one of my friends owns an excellent catering company and he gave me a great deal on the price. We ate like kings.

There were other small problems when it came to the whore house scene. We lost a few girls who were suppose to be in it, but one of the actresses did an excellent job in the orgy scene and made up the loss ten time over. This scene was shot not in a great neighborhood so some people were sometimes uncomfortable but they stuck through it. We were lucky on the weather which was a scare in pre-production but it was decent to us after all.

The editing was done at Absurd Machine headquarters over four weeks. This is very short when it comes to editing time, but that’s all we could do on our budget. The film was edited on an Avid system and then put through the magic bullet process to add the excellent film look that it got.

As a low budget independent film that was shot in nine days, I think we did a great job, especially because of how it turned out; with a great high quality film which will be the first film in the Tan Man series for Pegside Films.
